Fall Fun, Painting Pumpkins

Fall Fun, Painting Pumpkins: Olaf, Frozen.

October is here and this means it is the season for pumpkins!!!! There is something about autumn that it is very easy to get into the fall spirit. Bring on the pumpkins, the apple picking, the baking, the pumpkin spice latte, the scarecrow decorations, crafts and Halloween celebrations!

Every year we carve pumpkins but pumpkins don’t last as long as we’d like and they always end up moldy after two or three days. Last year we started a new tradition to enjoy the pumpkins a little big longer …. Pumpkin Painting!!!

This is a great activity for the whole family. Our teen got a little creative, suggesting building Olaf from the movie Frozen (we all have to help with this) and the little one of the family did free style and made his own festive and unique design 🙂

Fall Fun, Painting Pumpkins: Olaf, Frozen.

A few suggestions for pumpkin painting:

  • Before painting, make sure your pumpkins are gently washed with soap and water.
  • We used acrylic paint with our teen to paint Olaf. We always wear old clothing because if acrylic paint ends up on your clothing, it can stain.
  • For Olaf’s face we printed a stencil and used a pencil to trace the outlines of the design into the pumpkin.
  • Use non-toxic tempera or water-based paint for the younger kids.
  • We added some shine to the pumpkins with glittery paint.
  • Have FUN!!!!!!! … That’s what its all about.

Last year we did a few other fun characters:

It was very fun even thought Olaf’s head fell a few times 🙂

Every day I love to see our decorated pumpkins next to our door!

Have a Festive and Fun Fall!

The Wave Organ at The Marina District

San Francisco The Wave Organ - Exploratorium

A few weeks ago after our second attempt we finally found one of San Francisco’s hidden and unusual spots: The Wave Organ. The Wave Organ is a wave activated acoustic instrument/sculpture part of the Exploratorium. The installation was developed by Peter Richards and sculptor and master stone mason George Gonzalesis in 1986.  It consists of 25 PVC organ pipes of various lengths that go into the water which creates the sound by the impact of waves against the pipe ends and the subsequent movement of the water in and out of the pipes.

San Francisco The Wave Organ - Exploratorium

It is a little tricky to get there. The Wave Organ is located on a jetty east of the St. Francis Yacht Club that forms the small Boat Harbor in the Marina district of San Francisco. The jetty itself and the Wave Organ were constructed with irregular granite and marble taken from a demolished gold-rush era cemetery.

It was a beautiful sunny but calm day without any crashing waves.  We couldn’t hear the music of the waves at the Wave Organ but we really enjoyed the relaxing and beautiful view of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate bridge from there. We heard The Wave Organ sounds best at high tide and during a full moon.  It was a fun trip out there, kids will enjoy it, make it one of your S.F. hidden spots.

Halloween Activities: Painting Pumpkins

Just sharing some fun Halloween ideas…Painting Pumpkins is a fun and creative activity that the whole family will enjoy!!!!

Halloween Activities: Painting Pumpkins
Halloween Activities: Painting Pumpkins

  1. Select your pumpkin with a smooth surface with no bruises, scratches, or blemishes.
  2. Clean, rinse and dry your pumpkin.
  3. Coat your pumpkin with white acrylic paint and let dry. That way the next set of colors will pop. We purchased the acrylic paints at Michael’s (remember to bring a coupon for a discount). If you have other kinds of paint at home you can test it out on a small area of the pumpkin to see if it sticks first. You can also paint the whole pumpkin with Multi-Purpose Sealer first. We didn’t do this step and so far our pumpkins has lasted for three weeks so far without a problem.
  4. After searching for ideas in Pinterest, we printed and traced our design onto the pumpkin with transfer paper using a pencil or with a permanent marker.
  5. If you want to make your design more fun you can add some glitter, decorations or embellishments accents to your pumpkin.
  6. And most important….Have fun with it and enjoy the proccess!!!
